The Biodiversity and Grassroots Advocacy Team facilitated a series of formal and informal meetings that brought together key network activists, NGO workers and others to discuss local and national advocacy initiatives and network development.
Community Media
PRAJ has initiated pilot community media activities in Sambour District, organized by CED and facilitated by ICSO. PRAJ also sponsored an introductory workshop on Community Media in Phnom Penh. The workshop introduced NGO partners and network representatives to community media concepts, and the roles of NGOs and network organizers in supporting community media efforts.
Youth Initiatives
In a new program supported by PRAJ partner KYSD, Peace Corps-style Cambodian youth volunteers began six-month service commitments in rural communities. Before their departure, KYSD provided volunteers with a week-long orientation focusing on such topics as: starting and growing community youth clubs, Cambodia's environmental/land laws, the current state of Cambodia's forests and biodiversity, volunteerism, and living in solidarity with community members. The volunteers have initiated community youth clubs that engage youth in environmental and rights advocacy, as well as development activities. They also offer young people opportunities to learn about their rights, develop new skills, and participate in local governance.
PRAJ also recently supported a Phnom Penh-based workshop to introduce youth to the importance of biodiversity and other Cambodian and international environmental issues.
