The Development of a Long-Term Strategy for Legal Aid
PRAJ assisted the Royal Government's Council for Legal and Judicial Reform (CLJR) in carrying out a national survey of legal aid needs and resources. The survey was done in cooperation with a research and consultancy firm, Indochina Research Ltd. The survey has reviewed existing resources for the provision of legal aid, prioritized needs, and proposed various interventions for improving legal aid provision nationwide. The survey was carried out in conjunction with staff from CLJR, as well as specialists from PRAJ. As part of the survey process, PRAJ provided CLJR staff with training in survey techniques and project administration.
CLJR requested USAID's and PRAJ's assistance in conducting the legal aid survey as a part of the Legal and Judicial Reform Strategy of the Royal Government of Cambodia. The legal aid survey now provides the basis for a national Government strategy for legal aid, and its recommended actions are considered by Government institutions, NGOs, donors and legal practitioners.
