Alliance for
Conflict Transformations (ACT)
Partner Since: 2004
Project Title: Intra-Organizational
Conflict Management
Project Area: Phnom Penh
and Cambodia-wide
Summary: ACT uses training
and capacity building to help organizations
recognize and effectively deal with intra-organizational
conflicts. ACT also works towards the
peaceful coexistence of different religious
traditions and cultures by conducting
training on “Interfaith Dialogue”.
ACT operates in Phnom Penh but provides
services to groups throughout Cambodia.
Target groups are NGOs and labor groups
and religious leaders.
About the Organization:
The Alliance for Conflict Transformation
(ACT) started in 1998 as a cooperative
group of like-minded individuals committed
to working together to achieve common
goals of peace and reconciliation as the
basis for development, democratization
and the achievement of universal human
rights in Cambodia.
ACT consists of three distinct but complementary
and mutually-supporting departmental units:
the Training Unit (TU), the Consultation
and Information Unit (CIU) and the Network
Building Unit (NBU). These units
form part of and are managed on a daily
basis by a Secretariat, which is overseen
by an Executive Committee (Ex-Com) that
meets every two weeks to determine policy
and strategic direction.
While ACT has a relatively small permanent
structure due to financial constraints,
it can make use of a much larger operational
structure depending on the size of the
task at hand.
Members of ACT, each of whom works on
a specific area of social change within
their own organizations, continue to cooperate
closely and support each other with advice,
resources and exchange of ideas. Each
of ACT's core members holds a senior position
in leading NGOs focused on important issues
of social change. ACT also has a
group of about 10 associated volunteers
who are university students and contribute
voluntary support to various activities
on a part-time basis, such as administration,
training and field research. None
of ACT's members or staff is directly
affiliated with any political party, although
each may hold their own political preference.
ACT's network comprises a large number
of individuals and organizations who view
themselves as part of ACT either in a
personal or institutional capacity because
of their direct or indirect involvement
in ACT activities.
ACT uses training and capacity building
to transform negative power - traditionally
a source of human rights violations and
abuse - into a positive power which can
be utilized to protect and secure the
respect of human rights. ACT has
considerable experience of working with
other CNGOs on issues of structure, strategic
direction, problem identification and
resolution.
At the national level ACT focuses activities
on 6 provinces (Battambang, Banteay Meanchey,
Siem Riep, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chnnange
and Kratie) and Phnom Penh city. At the
regional level ACT cooperates in two regional
networks (SEACSN and Action Asia) on wider
issues of conflict resolution and peace-building
in the Southeast Asia region, coordinating
and participating in research activities
and academic discussions on regional and
country-specific issues.
