Sor Sor Trung (SST)

Partner Since: July 2006
Project Title: Building Advocacy and Problem Solving Capacity in Cambodian Communities
Project Area: Kratie and Mondulkiri Provinces
Summary: SST’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of Cambodian communities and province-based NGOs to advocate for their own rights and to participate in problem-solving and management within their communities. Project objectives are to

  • Improve advocacy, problem-solving, community management and conflict resolution skills of chosen community leaders in target areas in Mondulkiri and Kratie provinces .
  • C reate and support local networks of community-based organizations in Mondulkiri and Kratie to help communities work together to solve common problems in their areas.
  • Increase opportunities for communities and local authorities to join in community-based advocacy and participatory problem-solving through open forums.

About the Organization

In 1995, Novib commissioned a study into emerging Cambodian NGOs to make an inventory of quality and quantity. This study concluded that funding was not the only need of these young NGOs, but also more training and coaching in managerial and program areas. It was recommended that Novib would establish a consultancy/training institution in Cambodia to better address the concerns and issues of emerging local NGOs.

On 1 October 1996, Sor Sor Troung was established with the goal of contributing to the strengthening of civil society through capacity building for Cambodian NGOs. Sor Sor Troung now occupies a strategically important position in Cambodia, where more than 300 emerging Cambodian NGOs are in the desperate need of tailor made training and coaching. The organization simultaneously experiments with new information and awareness raising instruments, which will increase the institutional base of the organization and its capacity to facilitate sustainable participatory development.

SST organized additional training on Human rights and Democracy promotion, legal advocacy and public forum and other organizations got involved, leading to the creation of the network. Training was given to communities involved in conflicts related to fisheries, forestry, and land.

The SST works with small province-based Cambodian NGOs whom they selected as partners because they demonstrate strong commitment to work with poor and they meet the SST criteria. They must also be based in remote areas of targeted provinces and lack of opportunities to receive technical services support. Together they explore their experiences and the systems and strategies of their management styles in their organization and learn how to improve these. This will provide these groups with equal sharing opportunities, especially important for those that are rural areas based, which do not meet other NGOs often.
